The Seventeenth Century

Allan Ramsay, 'The Gentle Shepherd' 1685-1758

As the rough diamond from the mine
In breaking only shews its light,
Till polishing has made it shine
Thus learning makes the genius bright.
Marriage Portrait of Prince William of Orange and Princess Mary of England
Painted in 1641 by Van Dyck

The ten-year-old Mary, daughter of Charles I, and William of Orange, aged 15, are depicted in their wedding finery, including her wedding jewelry. William holds her finger, upon which is a plain gold band, in simple contrast to her diamond brooch with its new fashionable faceting.
